Why Use Zigbee Bulbs Over the Brand App

Most smart bulbs ship with a companion app and a cloud account. That works fine until the company changes their API, gets acquired, or shuts down — leaving you with expensive bricks. Pairing bulbs directly to your Zigbee network via Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA sidesteps all of that.

The practical advantages are real: automations trigger in under 100ms, groups of bulbs change colour simultaneously without the app's staggered delays, and you can control everything from HA dashboards and voice assistants without routing commands through someone else's server. Philips Hue is the prime example — the bulbs themselves are excellent, but pairing them directly to Zigbee2MQTT gives you full control without the £50 bridge.

In Zigbee2MQTT, Hue bulbs expose: brightness, colour temperature, hue/saturation, XY colour, and effect. They're extremely well-supported. The only catch: Hue bulbs are notoriously bad Zigbee routers for non-Hue devices. If you're mixing Hue bulbs with sensors from other brands, some sensors may prefer routing through non-Hue devices.

Colour accuracy varies, but for mood lighting or coloured accents they work adequately. Buy one first to test before committing to a bulk purchase — product codes can change silently between batches and the new version may not be supported.

Using Hue Bulbs Without the Hue Bridge

Philips Hue bulbs are standard Zigbee 3.0 devices. To use them with Zigbee2MQTT without a bridge:

1. Power the bulb off for 10 seconds, then on.
2. Repeat the off/on cycle five times quickly — the bulb should flash to indicate factory reset / pairing mode.
3. In Zigbee2MQTT, open the dashboard and click Permit join (All).
4. The bulb will appear within 30 seconds with its model number.
