How Zigbee Mesh Networking Works
Zigbee uses a three-tier architecture: coordinator, routers, and end devices.
The coordinator is the brains — it manages the network, assigns addresses, handles pairing, and bridges the Zigbee network to your Home Assistant instance via Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA. You only have one coordinator per Zigbee network. The Sonoff Zigbee 3.0 USB Dongle Plus is the recommended coordinator — it uses the CC2652P chip with excellent firmware support and a 20dBm radio.
Router devices are mains-powered Zigbee devices that stay awake and relay messages from other devices. When a sensor in the far corner of your house transmits, the signal might hop through two or three router devices before reaching the coordinator. This is the magic of mesh: range is limited only by how many routers you have, not by how far the coordinator's radio can reach.
End devices are typically battery-powered sensors. They sleep most of the time to conserve power, wake briefly to transmit (a door opening, a temperature reading), then sleep again. End devices connect to a single parent router (or the coordinator) and don't relay traffic for anyone else.
The mesh is self-healing: if a router device goes offline, devices that were routing through it will find an alternative path automatically — usually within a few minutes.

How Many Routers Do You Need?
For a typical home, aim for one router device per 10–15 square metres of floor space, or one per room at minimum. In practice:
- Flat/apartment (under 100m²): 5–8 router devices is usually enough with the coordinator centrally placed.
- 2-storey house: 10–15 routers, distributed across both floors. Floors attenuate signal significantly — add routers at intermediate points.
- 3-storey house or thick stone walls: 15–25 routers. Concrete, brick, and plaster all reduce Zigbee range. Put a router device in every room.
More routers is almost always better. Since Zigbee plugs and bulbs serve a primary purpose (switching devices, lighting), adding them for mesh purposes costs nothing extra — they're doing useful work anyway.
Best Zigbee Router Devices
The best router devices are plugs you'd buy anyway:
- SONOFF S26R2ZB: Reliable router, cheap, pairs easily. Good for rooms without smart bulbs.
- IKEA TRÅDFRI outlet: Excellent router, compact, doesn't block adjacent sockets.
- IKEA TRÅDFRI bulbs: Both tunable white and colour variants are reliable routers. IKEA bulbs are notably better mesh routers than Hue bulbs for mixed-brand networks.
- Tuya TS011F plugs: Good routers with the bonus of energy monitoring.
Avoid relying solely on Hue bulbs for routing if you have non-Hue sensors — Hue bulbs can preferentially route other Hue devices, leaving non-Hue sensors with poor connectivity.
Wi-Fi Interference and Channel Selection
Both Zigbee and Wi-Fi operate in the 2.4 GHz band, but they use different channel numbering. The overlap is real and causes problems if you don't plan for it.
Wi-Fi channel 1 overlaps Zigbee channels 11–13. Wi-Fi channel 6 overlaps Zigbee channels 15–22. Wi-Fi channel 11 overlaps Zigbee channels 21–24. The safe zone is Zigbee channel 25 or 26, which sits above Wi-Fi channel 11's upper edge and avoids all three common Wi-Fi channels.

Checking Your Mesh Topology in Zigbee2MQTT
Zigbee2MQTT includes a network map feature that shows which devices are routing through which other devices. Access it at http://homeassistant.local:8080 (or your Zigbee2MQTT frontend URL) → Map.
The map shows:
- Each device as a node (routers in a different colour from end devices)
- Lines showing routing relationships (which device connects through which router)
- Link quality scores (LQI — higher is better, 255 is max)
A healthy mesh shows most end devices connected through nearby routers, with short hop counts (1–3 hops). If you see end devices connected directly to the coordinator from far away, or hop counts of 5+, add router devices in the gap areas.
Trigger a fresh map scan via the Zigbee2MQTT dashboard → Map → click Update. The scan takes a few minutes and briefly increases network traffic.
Troubleshooting Weak Signal and Dropped Devices
Device drops off the network frequently
Check the network map — if the device is routing through a distant router or directly to the coordinator over a long distance, it's a range issue. Add a router device (plug or bulb) between the sensor and its current parent. After adding the router, the sensor should migrate to the closer parent within 30 minutes or you can force it by removing and re-pairing the sensor.
Device pairs but shows "unavailable" in HA
Usually a range issue or interference. Check Zigbee2MQTT logs for the device — look for "message failed" or "no response" entries. Move the device closer temporarily to confirm it works, then add a router device at the midpoint.
All devices drop simultaneously
This is usually the coordinator. Check the USB connection — the Sonoff Dongle Plus should be on a USB extension cable, not plugged directly into a USB 3.0 port (which can cause 2.4 GHz interference). Use a 50cm USB 2.0 extension to move the dongle away from the PC/server.
New device won't pair
Pair the device close to the coordinator first, then move it to its final location. End devices lock onto their parent router during pairing — pairing far from the coordinator means pairing over a potentially unstable path.
