An elegantly hidden smart lock that fits inside your existing deadbolt hardware and adds Apple Home Key and app-based control.

The Level Lock+ is one of the most interesting smart locks on the market because it refuses to look like a smart lock at all. Instead of replacing your whole interior and exterior hardware with something digital-looking, Level hides almost all of the electronics inside the deadbolt itself. From the outside, your door keeps a classic, normal appearance.
That design-first approach makes the Level Lock+ very appealing for style-conscious homeowners, landlords, and anyone living in a building where obvious exterior hardware changes are frowned upon. It also makes the Level somewhat unusual: this is a lock you buy because you care about aesthetics as much as you care about app features.
Why the Design Matters
Most smart locks announce themselves from across the street. The Level does the opposite. Once installed, it looks like a standard premium deadbolt. That means no big keypad, no flashy screen, and no visible sign that the lock is electronic. If your front door is part of a carefully designed entryway, the Level is in a category of one.
There are trade-offs, of course. Because the electronics are hidden, you do not get a built-in keypad unless you buy Level's separate keypad accessory. So the clean look comes at the expense of built-in code entry. For some people that is no problem. For others, especially households with frequent guests or cleaners, it means buying an extra accessory or relying on phone-based access.
Installation Experience
Level's marketing makes installation look laughably simple, and to be fair, it is simpler than many full-size smart locks. You are still replacing the deadbolt mechanism, but you keep a more traditional look and do not need to mount a huge interior battery box. In most standard doors, installation takes around 20 to 30 minutes.
The catch is that alignment matters even more than usual. Because the motor and battery are tucked into a compact internal layout, any drag in your deadbolt can make the lock feel less smooth. If your existing deadbolt already sticks when closing the door, fix that first. Otherwise you may blame the lock for what is really a door-frame issue.
Apple Home & Smart Features
The Level Lock+ adds one genuinely excellent modern convenience: Apple Home Key. If you are in the Apple ecosystem, this is a delight. You can tap your iPhone or Apple Watch against the lock to unlock the door, much like paying with Apple Pay. It is fast, clean, and easier to explain to family members than yet another app.
Level also supports remote control, status monitoring, and auto-lock behaviour through its app and compatible smart home platforms. The experience is best if you already live in Apple's world. Android and mixed-platform households can still use it, but some of the emotional magic is definitely strongest for iPhone users.
App controls are straightforward rather than feature-rich. You are not buying the Level for the deepest access scheduling system or the most advanced automation menu. You are buying it because it disappears elegantly while still behaving like a modern smart lock.
Daily Living
In day-to-day use, the Level feels polished. The lock motor is quieter than a lot of rivals, manual key operation remains smooth, and the overall impression is “premium” in a way that many locks never quite achieve. It is the sort of product that people who normally hate visible smart home clutter actually tolerate — or even like.
The downside is convenience trade-offs versus keypad-first rivals. Without the optional keypad, visitors cannot simply type a code at the door. For solo users, couples, and Apple-heavy households, this is not a major issue. For busier homes with guests or children who do not have smartphones, it matters more.
Cons
The biggest downside is value. The Level Lock+ is expensive for what it does. You are paying for design, miniaturisation, and the Apple Home Key experience more than for a maximal feature set. Competing locks from Schlage, Yale, or Eufy offer more access methods at lower prices.
The battery setup is also unusual because the battery lives inside the bolt itself. It is clever, but not as instantly intuitive as a standard interior battery compartment. Home Assistant and enthusiast integration support are serviceable rather than class-leading, and if you want a built-in keypad, total cost goes up again.
Verdict
The Level Lock+ is not the smartest smart lock in the broadest sense. It is the most elegant one. If you care deeply about preserving the look of your front door and you are already invested in Apple Home, it is a lovely piece of hardware that feels more refined than most rivals.
Score: 8.2/10
Brilliant design, lovely Apple integration, and genuinely discreet hardware — but the high price and lack of built-in keypad convenience mean it is best for a specific kind of buyer.

Ideal for design-conscious homeowners who want a smart lock that does not look like one.
