Kwikset Halo Review: Affordable Smart Lock Tested

The Kwikset Halo is one of those smart locks that gets recommended a lot because it hits an attractive price point. It promises Wi-Fi remote access without needing a separate bridge, offers the familiarity of a traditional keypad lock, and carries Kwikset's massive retail footprint and recognisable name. On paper, that is a compelling mix.

In practice, the Halo is a solid entry-level option with a few compromises you should understand before buying. It does the essentials well enough, but it is not as polished as Schlage's best locks or as slick as more premium fingerprint models. Think of it as a practical, mainstream smart lock rather than an enthusiast darling.

Installation & Setup

Installation is easy if your door is already in decent shape. Like most retrofit deadbolts, the Halo replaces an existing deadbolt and uses a fairly standard mounting process. The instructions are clear, and the hardware feels well made. Most buyers should be able to install it in under 30 minutes with a screwdriver.

App pairing is decent, though not the smoothest in the category. The Halo connects directly to Wi-Fi, which is convenient because there is no extra bridge to plug in, but it also means initial setup can take a bit longer than Bluetooth-first locks. Once connected, remote access works as promised.

Keypad Experience

The physical keypad is the real selling point here. It is simple, visible, and easy for the whole family to understand. Unlike app-heavy or hidden-design locks, the Halo requires almost no training. Guests can use a code. Kids can use a code. You can use a code when your phone is dead. There is something reassuring about that simplicity.

The keypad response is generally good, though we would not call it luxurious. It feels functional rather than premium. That is fine at this price level. The lock motor is a little louder and more abrupt than higher-end rivals, but not alarmingly so.

App & Wi-Fi Features

The Kwikset app lets you lock and unlock remotely, view history, create user codes, and manage scheduling. It covers the practical features most households care about. Temporary codes for guests are particularly handy, and because the lock uses Wi-Fi directly, you can manage it from anywhere without extra hardware.

The flip side of direct Wi-Fi is that the Halo is not the battery champion of the smart lock world. More on that in a moment. We also found the app perfectly functional but not especially elegant. It gets the job done, but it does not feel as modern or refined as the best smart home apps in 2025.

Security & Reliability

Kwikset uses its SmartKey security cylinder, which gives you re-keying flexibility and decent physical security for typical residential use. The lock also supports standard user-code controls and alerts. In everyday reliability, the Halo is good rather than exceptional. It usually works, but it feels a bit more “consumer electronics” and a bit less “premium entry hardware” than Schlage Encode.

One thing we strongly recommend is testing your door alignment before blaming any smart lock. The Halo's motor is not especially tolerant of doors with dragging bolts. If your deadbolt rubs the strike plate, fix that first for better performance and battery life.

Battery Concerns

Battery life is the Halo's main compromise. Because it uses Wi-Fi directly, expect battery swaps more often than with Bluetooth-based locks that rely on a hub or bridge for remote access. Heavy usage, lots of notifications, and weak Wi-Fi all accelerate drain.

That does not make the lock bad, but it does make it more maintenance-heavy than some alternatives. For a household that wants set-and-forget battery life, the Halo is not the category leader.

Verdict

The Kwikset Halo succeeds because it keeps smart lock ownership approachable. You get keypad convenience, remote access, no extra hub, and a familiar brand at a relatively reasonable price. The trade-offs are middling battery life, a just-okay app, and a less premium feel than pricier rivals.
