Reolink: Consumer-First

Reolink launched in 2009 and built its reputation on affordable, feature-packed cameras sold directly to consumers and via Amazon. Their cameras are designed to be plug-and-play — you set them up with an app, they work, no networking degree required. Recent models have moved firmly into prosumer territory with 4K sensors, smart AI detection, and solid RTSP/ONVIF support that makes them Home Assistant-friendly.

Reolink is a privately held Hong Kong-registered company. Their cameras communicate with Reolink's cloud servers by default, but cloud access is entirely optional — you can block internet access and use local RTSP without any functionality loss in HA.

Hikvision: Pro/Prosumer

Hikvision is the world's largest CCTV manufacturer by revenue, headquartered in Hangzhou, China. Their cameras are the default choice for professional installers — they have a broader product range, better low-light performance (particularly their ColorVu and DarkFighter lines), more granular ONVIF support, and more sophisticated NVR ecosystem (iVMS-4200, Hik-Connect).

The trade-off: Hikvision cameras cost more (typically 1.5–2× Reolink for equivalent resolution), are more complex to configure, and carry significant political baggage (see Privacy section).

Reolink is consistently 40–60% cheaper for equivalent specs. For a 4-camera home system, that's a £150–200 saving that you could put toward better storage, a dedicated HA server, or more cameras.

Image Quality

Daytime Performance

At 4K resolution in daylight, both brands produce sharp, usable footage. Hikvision's image processing tends to produce more natural colour rendition and better dynamic range handling (WDR). Reolink cameras sometimes oversaturate colours slightly and can blow out bright windows when the background is dark. The gap is noticeable on a monitor side by side, but both produce footage that clearly identifies faces and vehicles.

Low-Light and Night Vision

This is where Hikvision pulls ahead noticeably. Their ColorVu line uses a large aperture (F1.0) and a supplemental white light to produce full-colour night footage. Their DarkFighter line achieves usable colour at very low lux (0.003 lux on some models). Reolink's colour night vision relies on a warm spotlight, which is effective but produces a different aesthetic — and can be intrusive in residential settings.

For standard IR night vision (black and white), both brands are comparable at equivalent price points — 30m IR range is common on both.

Smart Detection

Hikvision's AcuSense technology provides on-camera human/vehicle detection with very low false positive rates — better than Reolink's equivalent. Reolink's person/vehicle detection works but triggers more false positives on shadows, birds, and moving branches. If you're running Frigate, the on-camera detection matters less — you're relying on Frigate's AI (Google Coral-accelerated) instead.

Reolink

Reolink has a native Home Assistant integration (maintained in core since HA 2023.x). It auto-discovers cameras on your network, creates entities for camera streams, motion detection, smart detection alerts (person, vehicle, animal), and doorbell events. Hikvision

Hikvision cameras use ONVIF, which HA supports via the ONVIF integration. For full Hikvision feature integration, you'd need the Hikvision integration from HACS, which uses the SDK API.

NVR Ecosystem Comparison

Reolink NVRs (RLN8-410, RLN16-410) are plug-and-play with Reolink cameras — auto-discover, set up in minutes. They support up to 4K recording, continuous or motion-triggered. The UI is simple and consumer-friendly. Downsides: limited ONVIF camera compatibility (works best with Reolink cameras), and the web UI is dated.

Hikvision NVRs (DS-7600NI series) are full ONVIF NVRs that work with cameras from multiple brands. The iVMS-4200 client software provides advanced features like heat mapping, line crossing analytics, and multi-camera synchronised playback. Better for mixed-brand installations or commercial use. More complex to configure.

For Home Assistant users, the best NVR is often Frigate — the HA add-on that handles both brands equally well via RTSP. It saves clips to local storage, provides AI detection, and integrates directly into HA dashboards and automations.

Privacy and Cloud Concerns

Reolink: Cloud is optional. The app works better with cloud (remote viewing, push notifications), but you can block the camera's internet access entirely and control it 100% locally via RTSP and the native HA integration. Reolink has not been subject to government sanctions.

Hikvision: In 2022, the US FCC added Hikvision to its "Covered List" of companies posing national security risks, restricting their products from US government use. The UK's surveillance camera commissioner also flagged Hikvision. The concern is that Hikvision is ~42% owned by the Chinese government and has supplied cameras to facilities linked to human rights abuses in Xinjiang.

For a private home, the practical risk is low — Hikvision cameras don't phone home with footage in normal operation. But if you work in sensitive professions, government, or simply prefer not to purchase from a state-controlled company, Reolink is the cleaner choice.
