What Is a Thread Border Router?

Thread is a low-power, mesh networking protocol designed for IoT devices — particularly battery-powered sensors and smart home accessories. A Thread Border Router (TBR) is a device that bridges the Thread network to your IP network (Wi-Fi/Ethernet), allowing Thread devices to be discovered and controlled by smart home controllers like Home Assistant, Apple HomeKit, or Google Home.

Without a Thread Border Router, Thread devices on your network can't be reached from outside the Thread mesh. The TBR is the gateway that makes Thread devices visible to the rest of your home network and the internet (for remote access).

Thread matters because Matter — the new universal smart home standard — uses Thread as its transport layer for battery-powered devices. As Matter adoption grows, having a Thread Border Router becomes increasingly important.

Do You Need One?

You need a Thread Border Router if:

• You have or plan to buy Matter-over-Thread devices (Eve Energy, Nanoleaf, newer Aqara sensors)
• You're using Apple HomeKit with Thread accessories
• You want Home Assistant to control Thread-based Matter devices natively

You don't immediately need one if you're only using Zigbee, Z-Wave, or Wi-Fi based devices. Zigbee has its own mesh and doesn't require a Thread Border Router.

Best Thread Border Routers in 2025

1. Apple HomePod Mini (~$99)

The HomePod Mini was one of the first mainstream Thread Border Routers and remains excellent for Apple ecosystem users. It runs the Thread Border Router function automatically alongside its HomeKit hub role. Fast, reliable, and zero configuration required. Downside: tied to the Apple ecosystem — doesn't expose Thread devices directly to Home Assistant without the HomeKit Controller integration.

2. Apple HomePod (2nd Gen) (~$299)

Same Thread Border Router capability as the Mini, with better audio. Overkill if you only need the TBR function, but excellent if you also want a home speaker.

3. Aqara Hub M3 (~$50)

The best-value Thread Border Router for Home Assistant users. The M3 combines Zigbee 3.0, Thread Border Router, Matter controller, and IR blaster in one compact device. For HA users, this is the most practical option — it handles both your Zigbee devices and Thread/Matter devices in one hub, and integrates cleanly via the HomeKit Controller integration.

4. Google Nest Hub (2nd Gen) (~$99)

Google's smart display acts as a Thread Border Router and works well within the Google ecosystem. Less useful for Home Assistant users.

5. Home Assistant Yellow

The HA Yellow has a built-in Thread module (Silicon Labs EFR32MG21) that can act as a Thread Border Router directly within Home Assistant. The cleanest integration for HA users — no third-party hub required. Requires the OpenThread Border Router add-on.

Home Assistant 2023.2 added native Matter support, which includes Thread device control. To use Thread devices in HA you need either:

• An external Thread Border Router (Aqara Hub M3, HomePod Mini) connected via HomeKit Controller or Matter integration
• A Home Assistant Yellow with the OpenThread Border Router add-on enabled
• A Home Assistant SkyConnect USB dongle in Thread mode

Once a TBR is connected, Thread-based Matter devices pair directly to HA via a QR code scan, just like Wi-Fi Matter devices.

Which Should You Buy?

For Home Assistant users: Aqara Hub M3 is the best value. It handles Zigbee and Thread in one device at $50. If you're building a pure HA setup from scratch, the HA Yellow is the cleanest integration.

For Apple users: HomePod Mini — plug in, it just works.
