The IKEA Dirigera hub is an interesting product because it sits between two very different worlds. On one side you have simple consumer smart homes that want low-cost lighting, blinds, and buttons without any hobbyist nonsense. On the other side you have advanced enthusiasts who already know what Zigbee, Matter, Home Assistant, and local automation all mean. Dirigera is clearly built for the first group, but it borrows just enough modern standards talk to make the second group curious.

That means expectations matter. Dirigera is not trying to become the deepest or most flexible hub in the world. It is trying to make IKEA’s ecosystem easier, cleaner, and more future-friendly than the old gateway ever managed.

Setup and App Experience

Setup is pleasingly simple. The hub is compact, tidy, and easy to hide on a shelf or near the router. The IKEA Home smart app guides you through pairing without too much friction, and the overall experience feels more modern than the older TRÅDFRI generation. Rooms are straightforward to organise, devices are easy to name, and the basic automation flows are clear enough for normal households.

IKEA deserves credit here: the app feels calmer than many budget smart home apps. It is not overloaded with weird store banners or unnecessary social features. It focuses on the devices, which is refreshing. For buyers who want smart home convenience rather than a new hobby, that simplicity is a strength.

Device Support and Matter

Dirigera is strongest when paired with IKEA’s own devices: lighting, smart blinds, remotes, motion sensors, air purifiers, and switches. In that environment it feels coherent and surprisingly polished for the price tier. Scenes and grouped control work well, and IKEA’s hardware tends to deliver good practical value.

The inclusion of Matter support is important, at least directionally. Matter does not magically solve everything overnight, but it gives Dirigera a more forward-looking identity than the old gateway. For households using Apple Home, Google Home, or Alexa alongside IKEA gear, that bridge matters. It suggests IKEA is trying to stay relevant in a more standards-based smart home future instead of trapping users in a one-brand island.

Still, this is not a universal hub in the enthusiast sense. Third-party device support is selective, and anyone expecting Home Assistant levels of flexibility will be disappointed. Matter broadens options, but it does not turn Dirigera into a lab platform.

Where It Still Falls Short

The biggest limitation is ambition. Dirigera is intentionally bounded. That is good for simplicity, but it also means power users will run into walls. Advanced conditional automations, detailed device exposure, deep diagnostics, and broad cross-brand experimentation are not its lane.

The automation system is fine for schedules, scenes, and basic triggers, but it is not especially expressive. If you want “if this sensor triggers, but only after sunset, unless someone is already home, then fade these three lights to 20 percent,” you are drifting out of IKEA territory and into Home Assistant territory.

That does not make Dirigera bad. It just makes it honest. It is a consumer hub, not a smart home operating system.

Verdict

The IKEA Dirigera hub is a solid step forward from the old TRÅDFRI gateway. It is easier to set up, nicer to use, and better positioned for the modern smart home thanks to Matter support. Within the IKEA ecosystem it makes a lot of sense and often represents very good value.

It is not the right hub for enthusiasts chasing maximum flexibility, but it was never trying to be. For simple, affordable, standards-aware smart homes, Dirigera is a sensible and increasingly mature choice.
