Since its launch in 2011, the Nest Learning Thermostat has been the benchmark for smart home climate control. The 4th generation model, released in late 2024, is the most significant redesign in a decade — and addresses most of the long-standing criticisms. But with strong competition from Ecobee and Honeywell, does it still deserve the crown?
Design
The Nest Learning Thermostat's iconic round form factor remains, but the 4th gen is slimmer and more refined. The stainless steel ring has been replaced with a matte brushed metal finish in Polished Silver, Brushed Brass, Polished Gold, and Matte Black. The display is sharper, brighter, and now reads comfortably from across a room.
On the wall, the Nest is simply beautiful. No other smart thermostat approaches it aesthetically. The ambient light sensor dims the display at night and brightens it in daylight. When you walk past, the display wakes and shows the current temperature in a large, readable font.
Learning Algorithm
The "learning" in Nest Learning Thermostat means exactly what it says. During the first week of use, Nest pays attention every time you adjust the temperature and what time it is. After 1–2 weeks, it has enough data to build a schedule that matches your actual habits. Most users report that after the learning period, they rarely touch the thermostat — it just maintains comfortable temperatures on its own.
The Nest also uses presence detection (via its built-in sensor and your phone's location) to enter an energy-saving Eco mode when nobody is home. When it detects you returning, it starts conditioning the home so it's comfortable when you arrive.
Compared to the Ecobee's more manual scheduling approach, Nest's learning is genuinely magical when it works. Occasionally it makes odd choices (it might lower the heat on a cold Sunday because you happened to go out one Sunday), but these can be manually overridden.
HomeKit & Smart Home Integration
The 4th generation finally adds native Apple HomeKit support — a feature Ecobee has had for years and that Nest users have been requesting for nearly as long. Setup with HomeKit is clean: scan the code, and the thermostat appears in the Home app with full control including scheduling.
Google Home integration is, predictably, excellent. The Nest works natively with Google Assistant for voice control. Amazon Alexa is also supported. SmartThings integration is available via a third-party handler.
Energy Savings
Google claims the Nest Learning Thermostat can save up to 12% on heating and 15% on cooling costs. Independent studies put the savings at 10–15% on average. In a home spending $1,200/year on HVAC, that's $120–$180 saved annually — meaning the thermostat pays for itself in 1–2 years.
The Nest app shows detailed energy usage history, including a "Nest Leaf" icon that appears when you're set to an energy-efficient temperature. The monthly Energy Report emails provide a breakdown of usage, runtime, and estimated savings compared to a baseline.
Home Assistant Integration
The official Nest integration in Home Assistant connects via Google's Device Access API, which requires a one-time $5 registration fee with Google. Once set up, the integration exposes the thermostat entity, temperature sensors, and presence mode to Home Assistant. It's cloud-based (no local API), but it's stable and works well for most use cases.
If local control is a priority, Ecobee's local API is technically superior. But for most Home Assistant users, the Nest cloud integration is reliable enough for everyday automation use.
Our Verdict: 8.5/10
The Nest Learning Thermostat 4th Gen is the best-designed smart thermostat on the market, and its learning algorithm genuinely delivers on its promise. The addition of HomeKit in the 4th gen removes the biggest long-standing objection. It loses points against Ecobee for lack of room sensors and cloud-dependent Home Assistant integration — but for users who value design and set-it-forget-it simplicity, it's still one of the best smart thermostats you can buy.
