Nest Protect Review: Best Smart Smoke Detector?

Overview

The Google Nest Protect has occupied the top spot in smart smoke detection since its 2013 launch. Now in its second generation, it remains the most thoughtfully designed smoke and carbon monoxide detector on the consumer market. It's not cheap — a single unit costs significantly more than a standard detector — but for those who want the best protection and the smartest connected experience, it remains largely unmatched.

We've been living with Nest Protect units across a 4-bedroom home for over two years. What follows is our honest assessment of what it does brilliantly and where it falls short.

Design & Hardware

Nest Protect has a distinctive look: a square unit with rounded corners in either white or black, featuring a multi-colour LED ring around a large central button. It mounts to the ceiling via a twist-lock backplate — once the backplate is screwed in, the unit attaches and detaches easily without tools, making battery replacement straightforward.

The build quality is excellent. The housing is solid plastic that feels premium rather than hollow. The LED ring glows green to indicate "all clear" when you walk beneath it at night (the Pathlight feature), and cycles through white, yellow, and red to indicate status and alarm levels.

Available in battery-powered (uses 6 AA batteries) and wired (hardwired 120V AC with battery backup) versions. Both versions have Wi-Fi connectivity for app communication and interconnection with other Nest Protects on the same account.

Detection Performance

This is where Nest Protect genuinely earns its premium price. It uses a split-spectrum sensor that combines photoelectric and heat sensing. This approach is significantly more effective at detecting both slow smouldering fires (which produce larger smoke particles that photoelectric sensors catch well) and fast-flaming fires (better detected by ionisation sensors or heat).

Heads Up Early Warning

One of Nest Protect's most valued features is "Heads Up" — a gentle spoken warning that precedes a full alarm. When it detects early signs of smoke, it says calmly: "Heads Up. There's smoke in the Kitchen." This gives you time to investigate (burnt toast?) before the full alarm triggers. It reduces the likelihood of panicked false alarm silencing while still alerting you to potential issues.

CO Detection

The carbon monoxide sensor meets US UL 2034 and European EN 50291 standards. In our testing, it responded appropriately to test concentrations and the app delivered an alert within seconds. Crucially, the voice alert identifies the problem as CO specifically, not smoke — important because the response (open windows, evacuate) is different from a fire.

False Alarm Rate

In two years across multiple units in varied locations (including adjacent to a busy kitchen), we experienced zero nuisance alarms. The Steam Check feature specifically reduces false alarms from shower steam — detecting the pattern of humidity rise that characterises shower use rather than a fire condition. This is something cheap detectors consistently fail at.

App & Smart Features

The Google Home app (which has absorbed Nest's dedicated app) is the control centre for Nest Protect. From the app you can: view the status of all your Nest Protects, run a sound and LED test, silence an alarm (with safety confirmation), receive push notifications for alarms, Heads Up alerts, and low battery warnings.

Notification Granularity

Notifications are excellent. You receive alerts that specify which room triggered the alarm, the type of hazard (smoke or CO), and the severity level. If you have multiple units, you see all of them in a single view with their status clearly indicated. This clarity under stress — when you're away from home and panicking — is invaluable.

Monthly Check

Nest Protect performs an automatic self-test called Nightly Promise every night while the house is quiet, checking its sensors, speaker, LED, and Wi-Fi connection. If anything fails, you'll know immediately via app notification rather than discovering a faulty detector in an emergency.

Smart Home Integration

Nest Protect integrates with Google Home, allowing you to ask "Hey Google, are there any smoke alarms active?" and receive a status response. When an alarm triggers, it can activate Google Home routines — for example, turning on all the lights in the house and unlocking smart locks for emergency egress.

For Home Assistant users, there's a community Nest integration that exposes Protect entities, allowing automations to trigger on alarm state changes. This enables scenarios like: flash all Zigbee lights red when any Protect triggers, or send a notification to specific users at work.

Apple HomeKit is not natively supported, which is a genuine limitation for Apple ecosystem users. There are workarounds via Homebridge, but native support remains absent. If HomeKit is essential, the First Alert Onelink is your better choice.
