IKEA TRÅDFRI smart lights represent some of the best value in smart home lighting. They're reliable Zigbee devices that cost a fraction of Philips Hue, and they integrate beautifully with Home Assistant — once you know the right approach.
The trick is picking the right integration method. You have three options: the IKEA Dirigera gateway integration, direct Zigbee pairing (no gateway needed), or the newer Matter protocol. Each has trade-offs, and this guide covers all three so you can pick what works best for your setup.
IKEA TRÅDFRI Overview
TRÅDFRI devices use Zigbee 3.0 as their underlying protocol. The range includes bulbs (white spectrum and colour), outlets, motion sensors, remote controls, blinds, and the DIRIGERA hub (their current generation gateway). All of these can be integrated into Home Assistant.
IKEA's smart home line has evolved significantly. The older TRÅDFRI gateway has been discontinued and replaced by the DIRIGERA. If you're buying new, you'll get the DIRIGERA — which has a fully supported Home Assistant integration.
Integration Methods Compared
| Method | Gateway Required | Cloud Dependency | Complexity |
|---|---|---|---|
| DIRIGERA Gateway | Yes (DIRIGERA) | Partial | Easy |
| Direct Zigbee | No (USB dongle) | None | Medium |
| Matter | Varies | None | Easy |
Via IKEA Gateway (Dirigera)
The DIRIGERA integration is the simplest path if you already own the hub. Home Assistant includes a native DIRIGERA integration.
Step 1: Add the Integration
Go to Settings → Devices & Services → Add Integration. Search for "IKEA DIRIGERA". HA will scan for the hub on your network.
Step 2: Authenticate
When prompted, press the action button on the DIRIGERA hub once. This authorises Home Assistant to connect. You'll hear a chime from the hub when the pairing succeeds.
Step 3: Review Entities
All your TRÅDFRI lights, outlets, sensors, and remotes will appear as entities. Lights appear as light.* entities, outlets as switch.*, and motion sensors as binary_sensor.*.
Direct Zigbee Pairing
This is the most powerful method. You bypass the IKEA gateway entirely and connect TRÅDFRI devices directly to Home Assistant via a Zigbee USB dongle and Zigbee2MQTT or the ZHA integration.
What You Need
- A Zigbee USB coordinator (Sonoff Zigbee 3.0 USB Dongle Plus, HUSBZB-1, or similar)
- Zigbee2MQTT (recommended) or ZHA integration in HA
Setting Up Zigbee2MQTT
Install the Zigbee2MQTT add-on from the HA Add-on Store. Configure it with your Zigbee coordinator's serial port. Then, to pair a TRÅDFRI bulb, enable pairing mode in Zigbee2MQTT and reset the bulb by toggling it off/on six times rapidly.
Pairing TRÅDFRI Remotes
IKEA remotes and motion sensors pair the same way — enable join mode in Zigbee2MQTT, then hold the pairing button on the device (usually requires a paperclip). Once paired, they appear as entities you can use in any HA automation.
Advantages of Direct Zigbee
- Completely local — no IKEA cloud dependency
- Works even if IKEA's servers are down
- Mix TRÅDFRI with Zigbee devices from other brands on the same network
- Full access to device features including color temperature, brightness, and power reporting
Matter Option
IKEA has been rolling out Matter support for some of their newer devices. The DIRIGERA hub can act as a Matter bridge, exposing TRÅDFRI devices as Matter endpoints that Home Assistant can control via its Matter integration.
To use this, enable Matter bridging in the IKEA Home Smart app, then add the Matter device in Home Assistant via Settings → Devices & Services → Add Integration → Matter.
Matter support is still maturing for IKEA devices, so direct Zigbee remains the more reliable option as of mid-2025.
Automation Examples
Motion-Activated Lights
IKEA's TRÅDFRI motion sensor (paired directly via Zigbee) works as a binary_sensor in HA. Create an automation: when occupancy is detected → turn on light at 80% brightness. Add a five-minute no-motion timer to turn the light off.
Remote Control Remapped
IKEA's five-button remote can be mapped to any HA actions. Button 1 might trigger your "Movie Night" scene, button 2 turns all lights off, button 3 sets the bedroom to sleep mode. Far more flexible than the native IKEA app.
Sunrise Wakeup Light
Use a TRÅDFRI white spectrum bulb with a time-based automation to gradually increase brightness from 0% to 100% over 30 minutes before your alarm, simulating sunrise.
Tips & Gotchas
- Factory reset before Zigbee pairing: If a TRÅDFRI bulb was previously paired to the IKEA gateway, you must factory reset it before it will join a different Zigbee network.
- Router vs endpoint devices: TRÅDFRI bulbs act as Zigbee routers, extending your mesh network. Battery-powered devices (remotes, sensors) are end devices.
- Don't mix gateways: A bulb can only be on one Zigbee network at a time — either the IKEA gateway or your Zigbee2MQTT network, not both.
- Firmware updates: If using direct Zigbee, you lose access to OTA firmware updates that IKEA pushes through their gateway. This is usually fine, but worth knowing.
Bottom Line
For the best Home Assistant experience with IKEA TRÅDFRI, go direct Zigbee with Zigbee2MQTT. It's fully local, highly reliable, and gives you the most flexibility. If you already have the DIRIGERA hub and want a simple setup, the native integration works fine for basic control — just don't expect scenes or advanced features yet.
