The Google Nest Cam (Wired) occupies an interesting position in the security camera market. It's priced in the mid-range — more than a Blink, less than a Arlo Pro 5S — but it carries Google's promise of genuinely smart AI-powered detection, seamless Google Home integration, and some of the best-looking camera hardware around. After months of testing with two units covering our front door and rear garden, here's what we found.
Google Nest Cam (Wired)
1080p wired outdoor security camera with HDR, person/vehicle/animal detection, and Google Home integration.

Google refreshed the Nest Cam lineup in 2021 and has kept the wired model largely unchanged since — a sign that they largely got it right. The wired variant uses a USB-C power cable and can also be powered via an included weatherproof cable for outdoor installations. It records in 1080p HDR, has a 130° field of view, and offers local event storage via onboard flash memory (even if your internet goes down, it captures up to one hour of events locally).

Design & Setup
The Nest Cam Wired is genuinely attractive — a smooth white cylinder with a magnetic base that rotates and tilts intuitively. Mounting is magnetic, meaning you can remove the camera for charging or to bring indoors without unscrewing anything. The outdoor weatherproof installation requires routing a slim cable under a door or through a small drilled hole, which is tidier than bulkier wired competitors.
Setup in the Google Home app is smooth — scan the code on the base, give it your Wi-Fi password, and you're done in under three minutes. The app walks you through positioning with a live view guide, and you can draw custom activity zones immediately to reduce false alerts from trees or passing traffic.
Video Quality
Daytime video quality is outstanding for the price. HDR handling is impressive: when the sky is bright behind a person walking up your path, the Nest Cam balances the exposure far better than many competitors, keeping both the face and the background legible. Colours are natural, and the 1080p resolution is sharp enough that you can comfortably make out faces, clothing details, and number plates at 10–15 feet.
Night vision is where the Nest Cam Wired really excels. It automatically switches between IR black-and-white and colour modes depending on available light. In areas with street lighting or porch lights, the colour night vision kicks in and produces footage that's far more useful for identifying people or vehicles. In pitch-black conditions, IR takes over and remains sharp at up to around 20 feet.
AI Detection & Alerts
Even without a Nest Aware subscription, the Nest Cam Wired offers basic person detection — sending you an alert when it sees a person rather than a car headlight or a rustling bush. This alone puts it ahead of Blink's free tier. With a Nest Aware plan, you unlock:
- Familiar face alerts — recognise known people and suppress or customise alerts
- Vehicle detection — separate alerts for cars pulling into the driveway
- Animal detection — useful if neighbourhood cats trigger endless alerts
- Package detection — know when a delivery has been left at your door
- Activity zones — draw custom zones; only alert when motion happens within them
In testing, person detection accuracy was around 94% — genuinely impressive. False positives (tree shadows, insects near the lens at night) were rare. The familiar face feature is eerie-good: after enrolling three faces, the camera correctly identified each of them in varied lighting conditions.
Google Home Integration
As you'd expect, Google Home integration is flawless. Ask any Google Nest speaker or display "Hey Google, show me the front door" and you'll see a live 1080p feed within two seconds. Automations in Google Home can trigger based on camera events — for example, turning on your Philips Hue porch light when a person is detected after sunset.
The camera now supports Matter and Thread, meaning integration with other smart home platforms is becoming easier. Home Assistant users can pull in the Nest Cam via the Google Nest integration, though live streaming in HA still requires a subscription and some configuration.
Google Nest Aware Plans
Unlike some competitors, Nest Aware plans cover all cameras on your account — not per-camera pricing. This makes the subscription much more palatable if you run multiple cameras:
- Nest Aware ($8/month): 60-day event history, person/vehicle/animal/package detection, activity zones
- Nest Aware Plus ($12/month): All of the above plus 10 days of 24/7 continuous recording and familiar face alerts
Without any subscription, you get 1 hour of local event storage and basic person detection. This is a reasonably generous free tier, but serious users will want Nest Aware for the cloud history and expanded detection.
vs. Competition
| Camera | Resolution | Free Detection | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nest Cam Wired | 1080p HDR | Person | ~$99 |
| Blink Outdoor 4 | 1080p | Motion only | ~$65 |
| Ring Stick Up Cam | 1080p | Motion only | ~$79 |
| Arlo Pro 5S | 2K HDR | Person/Vehicle | ~$180 |
Verdict
Our Verdict: 9/10 — Best Mid-Range Wired Camera
The Google Nest Cam Wired remains one of the best-balanced security cameras available. Excellent video quality, genuinely useful AI detection even on the free tier, outstanding Google Home integration, and smart industrial design make it hard to fault. The main downsides are the IP54 rating (less weatherproof than some competitors) and the subscription requirement to unlock full cloud history. For Google Home users, it's the obvious first choice. For everyone else, it's still worth serious consideration.
