Why PoE Cameras?
Power over Ethernet (PoE) cameras are the gold standard for serious home security setups. Unlike wireless cameras that depend on batteries or local power outlets, PoE cameras get both power and data through a single Ethernet cable. This means no batteries to replace, no Wi-Fi dropouts, and a wired connection that's faster and more reliable than any wireless protocol.
PoE cameras are also far more suitable for running AI-powered NVR software like Frigate, which requires consistent high-bandwidth video streams. A single 4K camera can generate 8–12 Mbps of H.264 data — fine for Ethernet, but problematic for a congested Wi-Fi network.
The tradeoff is installation: you need to run Ethernet cables to each camera location, which typically means drilling through walls or routing cable through attic/basement spaces. But once installed, a PoE camera system is nearly maintenance-free and far more reliable than wireless alternatives.

To set up a PoE camera system, you'll need:
- PoE Switch or NVR — A PoE switch (8-port, 802.3af/at) provides power and connects cameras to your network. Look for 30W per port for cameras with spotlights or pan-tilt motors.
- Cat6 Ethernet cable — Run a dedicated cable to each camera location. Cat5e is technically sufficient but Cat6 is inexpensive and future-proof.
- NVR or server — Either a dedicated NVR from Reolink/Hikvision/Amcrest, or a PC/NUC running Frigate
- Storage — SSDs or HDDs for recording. A 4K camera at 15fps uses roughly 3–5 GB/day in H.265
